Why explore Finland by rail?

Finland combines design-led cities with lakes, forests and northern horizons. Helsinki, Tampere and Turku offer contrasting urban experiences.

With a Global Pass you can combine Finland with other participating countries without buying a new country-specific pass, where the trains are included. The challenge is designing a route around actual connections, required reservations and realistic sightseeing time.

Best destinations in Finland for a rail holiday

Helsinki: Senate Square

Begin with Senate Square, then allow time for Design District and Suomenlinna ferry. The Suomenlinna crossing is not automatically included with a rail pass. See the full Helsinki rail guide.

Tampere: Vapriikki Museum Centre

Begin with Vapriikki Museum Centre, then allow time for Pyynikki ridge and Tammerkoski rapids. Combine city sights with a lakeside walk if daylight permits. See the full Tampere rail guide.

Turku: Turku Castle

Begin with Turku Castle, then allow time for Turku Cathedral and Aura River. The castle and harbour are well away from some rail arrival points. See the full Turku rail guide.

How to travel around Finland with Interrail

VR operates an extensive domestic rail network. Long-distance distances are substantial and ferry connections to Sweden or Estonia have separate conditions.

Choose a realistic number of nights in each destination. Before activating a travel day, confirm whether the specific service is run by a participating operator and whether it requires a supplement or reservation. A pass does not automatically include local buses, city metro, airport links, summit railways or ferries.

Pass and seat reservation considerations

Most long-distance services have seat booking rules; sleeper accommodation requires a supplement or separate booking.

Arriving by train and reaching the sights

Helsinki is a useful starting point, with key arrival stations including Helsinki Central. For Turku, consider Turku main railway station. Always confirm your station and the last-mile walk, bus or tram before paying for a hotel.

Check daylight and winter conditions when planning long-distance excursions.

A practical rail itinerary idea

For a short introduction, begin in Helsinki and continue to Tampere . If time permits, include Turku for a contrasting stop. This is a suggested sequence of places, not a claim of a daily direct service; check actual connections in the Rail Planner app and at the operator.

Practical tips for your Finland train trip

  • Check timetables for the exact day: frequency and border connections can change.
  • Confirm pass acceptance and book any compulsory seats before finalising accommodation.
  • Compare the total pass cost plus reservations against point-to-point tickets.
  • Reserve separate local transport or attraction tickets where required.
