Why explore Spain by rail?
Spain’s high-speed corridors connect major cities, alongside regional trains and distinct landscapes. Madrid, Barcelona and Andalusia offer variety.
With an Interrail Global Rail Pass you can combine Spain with other participating countries without buying a new country-specific pass, where the trains are included. The challenge is designing a route around actual connections, required reservations and realistic sightseeing time.
Best destinations in Spain for a rail holiday
Madrid: Prado Museum
Begin with Prado Museum, then allow time for Royal Palace and Retiro Park. High-speed departures use more than one terminal; allow transfer time. See the full Madrid rail guide.
Barcelona: Sagrada Família
Begin with Sagrada Família, then allow time for Gothic Quarter and Park Güell. Book major Gaudí sights ahead and budget for city metro fares. See the full Barcelona rail guide.
Seville: Real Alcázar
Begin with Real Alcázar, then allow time for Cathedral and Giralda and Plaza de España. Santa Justa is outside the tight old-town lanes; allow a local transfer. See the full Seville rail guide.
How to travel around Spain with Interrail
RENFE and some other participating operators serve eligible trains. Multiple Madrid and Barcelona stations need careful attention.
Choose a realistic number of nights in each destination. Before activating a travel day, confirm whether the specific service is run by a participating operator and whether it requires a supplement or reservation. A pass does not automatically include local buses, city metro, airport links, summit railways or ferries.
Pass and seat reservation considerations
Seat reservations are compulsory on many high-speed/long-distance trains and passholder spaces can be constrained.
Arriving by train and reaching the sights
Madrid is a useful starting point, with key arrival stations including Madrid-Puerta de Atocha / Chamartín (route-dependent). For Seville, consider Sevilla Santa Justa. Always confirm your station and the last-mile walk, bus or tram before paying for a hotel.
Check high-speed station locations and allow sufficient time for onward connections.
A practical rail itinerary idea
For a short introduction, begin in Madrid and continue to Barcelona. If time permits, include Seville for a contrasting stop. This is a suggested sequence of places, not a claim of a daily direct service; check actual connections in the Rail Planner app and at the operator.
Practical tips for your Spain train trip
- Check timetables for the exact day: frequency and border connections can change.
- Confirm pass acceptance and book any compulsory seats before finalising accommodation.
- Compare the total pass cost plus reservations against point-to-point tickets.
- Reserve separate local transport or attraction tickets where required.
