Why choose Edinburgh for a European rail trip?
Edinburgh is one of the rewarding stops to consider in Great Britain. Discover Edinburgh Castle, spend time around Royal Mile and include Arthur's Seat if your visit allows. The Interrail Global Pass can help link this stop with other participating rail destinations when the chosen train is eligible.
If you have a flexible pass, decide whether Edinburgh is a daytime sightseeing stop or a place to spend the night; using an extra travel day for a short transfer is not always the best value.
What to see and do in Edinburgh
- Edinburgh Castle
- Royal Mile
- Arthur's Seat
Choose the sights that suit your available time in Edinburgh. Check admission, opening days and local travel separately; attraction tickets are not included with the Interrail Global Pass.
Arriving in Edinburgh by train
Main rail gateway: Edinburgh Waverley. The actual station for your journey depends on the train and route. Verify whether the pass covers your operator, and inspect the platform and service information shortly before departure.
From station to sightseeing
Castle tickets and festival-period accommodation may need early booking. A pass does not generally include city metros, trams, sightseeing buses or attraction admissions unless a specific benefit says otherwise.
A practical one- or two-day sightseeing plan
After arriving in Edinburgh, allow time to reach your accommodation or arrange luggage storage. Choose one main sightseeing area rather than assuming every attraction is beside the station. For example, compare the locations of Edinburgh Castle and Royal Mile before fixing the order of your visit. For an overnight stop, keep some time free before your next departure and avoid tight connections with timed admission tickets.
Staying overnight can make sense if the city has several attractions or if your next connection leaves early. For a shorter stopover, verify luggage storage, opening hours and how far the sights are from the station.
Using the Interrail Global Pass for Edinburgh
For Edinburgh, check the participating operator and the station shown on your journey. Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket are different stops. Reservations can be useful on busy intercity services; sleeper accommodation requires separate arrangements. Local city transport is not a general Interrail Global Rail Pass inclusion.
Seat reservation policies vary; sleeper berths and Eurostar services require separate reservations/supplements. Add each required journey to the mobile pass in accordance with the current instructions and keep seat reservation documents separately available when necessary. Pass validity is not a guarantee of a seat.
