Why choose Lisbon for a European rail trip?
Lisbon is one of the rewarding stops to consider in Portugal. Discover Belém Tower, spend time around Alfama and include Praça do Comércio if your visit allows. The Interrail Global Pass can help link this stop with other participating rail destinations when the chosen train is eligible.
If you have a flexible pass, decide whether Lisbon is a daytime sightseeing stop or a place to spend the night; using an extra travel day for a short transfer is not always the best value.
What to see and do in Lisbon
- Belém Tower
- Alfama
- Praça do Comércio
Choose the sights that suit your available time in Lisbon. Check admission, opening days and local travel separately; attraction tickets are not included with the Interrail Global Pass.
Arriving in Lisbon by train
Main rail gateway: Lisboa Santa Apolónia / Oriente (route-dependent). The actual station for your journey depends on the train and route. Verify whether the pass covers your operator, and inspect the platform and service information shortly before departure.
From station to sightseeing
The historic hills require walking or separately paid transit; check the correct Lisbon terminal. A pass does not generally include city metros, trams, sightseeing buses or attraction admissions unless a specific benefit says otherwise.
A practical one- or two-day sightseeing plan
After arriving in Lisbon, allow time to reach your accommodation or arrange luggage storage. Choose one main sightseeing area rather than assuming every attraction is beside the station. For example, compare the locations of Belém Tower and Alfama before fixing the order of your visit. For an overnight stop, keep some time free before your next departure and avoid tight connections with timed admission tickets.
Staying overnight can make sense if the city has several attractions or if your next connection leaves early. For a shorter stopover, verify luggage storage, opening hours and how far the sights are from the station.
Using the Interrail Global Pass for Lisbon
CP services connect the main cities. Cross-border Portugal–Spain passenger connections are limited, so inspect exact route options.
Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services require seat reservations; regional services vary. Add each required journey to the mobile pass in accordance with the current instructions and keep seat reservation documents separately available when necessary. Pass validity is not a guarantee of a seat.
Where to go after Lisbon
Continue your Portugal adventure with Porto and Coimbra. These are suggested next places, not guaranteed direct or daily trains; check running services and travel times for your date. Cross-border options should also be checked against current network availability.
