Why choose Sofia for a European rail trip?
Sofia is one of the rewarding stops to consider in Bulgaria. Discover Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, spend time around Serdica remains and include Vitosha mountain views if your visit allows. The Interrail Global Pass can help link this stop with other participating rail destinations when the chosen train is eligible.
If you have a flexible pass, decide whether Sofia is a daytime sightseeing stop or a place to spend the night; using an extra travel day for a short transfer is not always the best value.
What to see and do in Sofia
- Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
- Serdica remains
- Vitosha mountain views
Choose the sights that suit your available time in Sofia. Check admission, opening days and local travel separately; attraction tickets are not included with the Interrail Global Rail Pass.
Arriving in Sofia by train
Main rail gateway: Sofia Central railway station. The actual station for your journey depends on the train and route. Verify whether the pass covers your operator, and inspect the platform and service information shortly before departure.
From station to sightseeing
Use urban transport or walking for sights away from the main station. A pass does not generally include city metros, trams, sightseeing buses or attraction admissions unless a specific benefit says otherwise.
A practical one- or two-day sightseeing plan
After arriving in Sofia, allow time to reach your accommodation or arrange luggage storage. Choose one main sightseeing area rather than assuming every attraction is beside the station. For example, compare the locations of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Serdica remains before fixing the order of your visit. For an overnight stop, keep some time free before your next departure and avoid tight connections with timed admission tickets.
Staying overnight can make sense if the city has several attractions or if your next connection leaves early. For a shorter stopover, verify luggage storage, opening hours and how far the sights are from the station.
Using the Interrail Global Pass for Sofia
BDŽ runs national rail services; expect longer journey times than on Western European high-speed corridors and verify connections carefully.
Check long-distance and overnight seat/sleeper reservations, and whether international rail links are operating for the chosen date. Add each required journey to the mobile pass in accordance with the current instructions and keep seat reservation documents separately available when necessary. Pass validity is not a guarantee of a seat.
