Why explore Croatia by rail?

Croatia brings a contrast of Zagreb’s café culture and the Adriatic coast. Rail serves the capital and selected destinations, but not every famous seaside town.

With a Global Pass you can combine Croatia with other participating countries without buying a new country-specific pass, where the trains are included. The challenge is designing a route around actual connections, required reservations and realistic sightseeing time.

Best destinations in Croatia for a rail holiday

Zagreb: Ban Jelačić Square

Begin with Ban Jelačić Square, then allow time for Upper Town and Museum of Broken Relationships. Allow time between the main station, central square and hillside Upper Town. See the full Zagreb rail guide.

Split: Diocletian's Palace

Begin with Diocletian's Palace, then allow time for Riva waterfront and Marjan hill. Coastal ferries and buses require their own tickets and timetables. See the full Split rail guide.

How to travel around Croatia with Interrail

Zagreb is the key rail interchange. Split can be reached on domestic rail services; Dubrovnik does not have a passenger rail station.

Choose a realistic number of nights in each destination. Before activating a travel day, confirm whether the specific service is run by a participating operator and whether it requires a supplement or reservation. A pass does not automatically include local buses, city metro, airport links, summit railways or ferries.

Pass and seat reservation considerations

Long-distance and cross-border services can have reservation conditions; check Croatian Railways and current international timetables.

Arriving by train and reaching the sights

Zagreb is a useful starting point, with key arrival stations including Zagreb Glavni kolodvor. For Split, consider Split railway station. Always confirm your station and the last-mile walk, bus or tram before paying for a hotel.

Use a separately paid bus or ferry for islands and rail-free coastal destinations.

A practical rail itinerary idea

For a short introduction, begin in Zagreb and continue to Split . Allow an unhurried additional day to explore beyond the railway station. This is a suggested sequence of places, not a claim of a daily direct service; check actual connections in the Rail Planner app and at the operator.

Practical tips for your Croatia train trip

  • Check timetables for the exact day: frequency and border connections can change.
  • Confirm pass acceptance and book any compulsory seats before finalising accommodation.
  • Compare the total pass cost plus reservations against point-to-point tickets.
  • Reserve separate local transport or attraction tickets where required.
