Why choose Split for a European rail trip?

Split is one of the rewarding stops to consider in Croatia. Discover Diocletian's Palace, spend time around Riva waterfront and include Marjan hill if your visit allows. The Interrail Global Pass can help link this stop with other participating rail destinations when the chosen train is eligible.

If you have a flexible pass, decide whether Split is a daytime sightseeing stop or a place to spend the night; using an extra travel day for a short transfer is not always the best value.

What to see and do in Split

  • Diocletian's Palace
  • Riva waterfront
  • Marjan hill

Choose the sights that suit your available time in Split. Check admission, opening days and local travel separately; attraction tickets are not included with the Global Rail Pass.

Arriving in Split by train

Main rail gateway: Split railway station. The actual station for your journey depends on the train and route. Verify whether the pass covers your operator, and inspect the platform and service information shortly before departure.

From station to sightseeing

Coastal ferries and buses require their own tickets and timetables. A pass does not generally include city metros, trams, sightseeing buses or attraction admissions unless a specific benefit says otherwise.

A practical one- or two-day sightseeing plan

After arriving in Split, allow time to reach your accommodation or arrange luggage storage. Choose one main sightseeing area rather than assuming every attraction is beside the station. For example, compare the locations of Diocletian's Palace and Riva waterfront before fixing the order of your visit. For an overnight stop, keep some time free before your next departure and avoid tight connections with timed admission tickets.

Staying overnight can make sense if the city has several attractions or if your next connection leaves early. For a shorter stopover, verify luggage storage, opening hours and how far the sights are from the station.

Using the Interrail Global Pass for Split

Zagreb is the key rail interchange. Split can be reached on domestic rail services; Dubrovnik does not have a passenger rail station.

Long-distance and cross-border services can have reservation conditions; check Croatian Railways and current international timetables. Add each required journey to the mobile pass in accordance with the current instructions and keep seat reservation documents separately available when necessary. Pass validity is not a guarantee of a seat.

Where to go after Split

Continue your Croatia adventure with Zagreb. These are suggested next places, not guaranteed direct or daily trains; check running services and travel times for your date. Cross-border options should also be checked against current network availability.
