Why explore Ireland by rail?
Ireland’s railway links lively cities, coastal landscapes and cultural centres. Dublin is the main hub, with attractive routes west and south.
With a Global Pass you can combine Ireland with other participating countries without buying a new country-specific pass, where the trains are included. The challenge is designing a route around actual connections, required reservations and realistic sightseeing time.
Best destinations in Ireland for a rail holiday
Dublin: Trinity College
Begin with Trinity College, then allow time for Dublin Castle and National Gallery. Heuston and Connolly serve different routes; crossing town takes time. See the full Dublin rail guide.
Galway: Spanish Arch
Begin with Spanish Arch, then allow time for Latin Quarter and Salthill Promenade. Salthill is farther from the railway station; allow additional transport. See the full Galway rail guide.
Cork: English Market
Begin with English Market, then allow time for St Fin Barre's Cathedral and Shandon. Cork Kent sits outside parts of the central shopping streets. See the full Cork rail guide.
How to travel around Ireland with Interrail
Iarnród Éireann serves the Republic and Northern Ireland Railways participates in the pass network. The island has no direct train link to continental Europe.
Choose a realistic number of nights in each destination. Before activating a travel day, confirm whether the specific service is run by a participating operator and whether it requires a supplement or reservation. A pass does not automatically include local buses, city metro, airport links, summit railways or ferries.
Pass and seat reservation considerations
Some trains may require or strongly recommend seat bookings; check the cross-border Belfast route and chosen service.
Arriving by train and reaching the sights
Dublin is a useful starting point, with key arrival stations including Dublin Heuston / Connolly (route-dependent). For Cork, consider Cork Kent. Always confirm your station and the last-mile walk, bus or tram before paying for a hotel.
International connections require ferries or flights, which are not automatically fully covered by the pass.
A practical rail itinerary idea
For a short introduction, begin in Dublin and continue to Galway . If time permits, include Cork for a contrasting stop. This is a suggested sequence of places, not a claim of a daily direct service; check actual connections in the Rail Planner app and at the operator.

- Check timetables for the exact day: frequency and border connections can change.
- Confirm pass acceptance and book any compulsory seats before finalising accommodation.
