Independent Global Rail Pass guide · Updated 19 October 2026 · Services, rules and availability may change.
Why visit Belfast by train?
Belfast is in Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, and is included in our island-of-Ireland rail guides. Plan time for Titanic Belfast, City Hall and the Cathedral Quarter. The Interrail Global Pass may cover participating rail services, but attractions and local urban transport are separate from the rail ticket.
A visit to Belfast can be combined with other Northern Ireland stops or a cross-border journey to Dublin. Treat the Irish Sea crossing separately when connecting the island with Great Britain; there is no rail tunnel or bridge linking the two islands.
Rail arrival: Belfast Grand Central
Use Belfast Grand Central as the main intercity station reference, and confirm your actual stop in the operator’s journey planner. Plan the onward walk or local transport to your accommodation; the station is not the same location as Titanic Belfast. Allow for luggage, accessibility needs and any service alterations.
Before travelling, confirm the departure platform, any engineering changes and station transfer time. The journey added to your mobile Interrail Global Rail Pass and any compulsory seat reservation must match the train you actually board.

Using the Interrail Global Pass here
Verify Enterprise timetable, pass acceptance and any applicable reservation. Some trains may require or strongly recommend seat bookings; check the cross-border Belfast route and chosen service. The Interrail Global Pass covers participating train services, not every operator or local transfer, and seat reservations or berth supplements may be mandatory. Always check the current train category and operator in the official planner.
Onward rail travel and more destinations
The Dublin connection crosses from Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland. Continue with Dublin, or plan onward journeys to Galway and Cork, allowing for a station transfer in Dublin where needed. These are island-of-Ireland itinerary ideas, not domestic UK journeys or guaranteed direct trains.
Read our Ireland country rail guide and cross-border planning warnings to understand where extra ground transport may be needed.
Making the most of your visit
Consider staying two nights if you want an unhurried visit to the main sights. For an overnight railway stop, compare accommodation near Belfast Grand Central with the more atmospheric central districts. Evaluate walking distance, steps, luggage storage and early departure times rather than choosing by price alone.
Keep independent attraction tickets flexible until compulsory rail reservations are confirmed. A pass may reduce the need for separate point-to-point tickets on eligible routes, but it does not guarantee a seat on a reservations-only departure.
