Start with the exact service
A country name alone cannot determine whether a reservation is required. Rules depend on the participating operator, service category, route and date. High-speed, overnight and popular international trains are especially likely to need a paid passholder seat reservation.
Countries often needing advance high-speed bookings
France: TGV and many international high-speed trains generally require paid reservations and may have limited passholder seats. Spain: AVE and many long-distance services require bookings; operator rules differ. Italy: Trenitalia Frecce and many Intercity services require paid reservations. Eurostar international services also require a passholder reservation and may sell out.
Countries where many conventional trains are flexible
Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Czechia have many participating regional or daytime services where advance seat reservations are not universally compulsory. This does not apply to every train, especially sleepers, premium services and international routes.
Nordic, Balkan and Baltic variations
Long-distance services in Norway, Sweden and Finland may involve reservations or supplements. In the Balkans the more urgent issue can be whether a passenger service is running at all. Baltic cross-border journeys may be limited or require awkward transfers; do not assume a through train.
How to reserve
Identify the participating train in the Rail Planner or the national operator timetable. Check whether a passholder-only reservation can be sold directly by the operator or through Interrail, what it costs, how it is delivered and what refund rules apply. Reserve only after confirming the chosen Global Pass is valid for the service.
What if no passholder seat is available?
Try another departure or date, a slower regional service, a different routing or a regular ticket. A valid pass does not override a compulsory reservation requirement. Never board a reservations-only service expecting to purchase a guaranteed seat later.
