Why explore Italy by rail?

Italy is ideal for art-city rail holidays: Rome, Florence and Venice can be linked with other regions and scenic routes.

With a Global Rail Pass you can combine Italy with other participating countries without buying a new country-specific pass, where the trains are included. The challenge is designing a route around actual connections, required reservations and realistic sightseeing time.

Best destinations in Italy for a rail holiday

Rome: Colosseum

Begin with Colosseum, then allow time for Roman Forum and Vatican Museums. Book major sights separately and distinguish Termini from Tiburtina departures. See the full Rome rail guide.

Florence: Duomo

Begin with Duomo, then allow time for Uffizi Gallery and Ponte Vecchio. Museum admission can sell out; many sights are walkable from Santa Maria Novella. See the full Florence rail guide.

Venice: St Mark's Square

Begin with St Mark's Square, then allow time for Rialto Bridge and Grand Canal. Santa Lucia opens onto the canals; vaporetto boat tickets are separate. See the full Venice rail guide.

How to travel around Italy with Interrail

Trenitalia’s high-speed Frecce and regional trains have different rules; check the operator before boarding because not every train brand participates.

Choose a realistic number of nights in each destination. Before activating a travel day, confirm whether the specific service is run by a participating operator and whether it requires a supplement or reservation. A pass does not automatically include local buses, city metro, airport links, summit railways or ferries.

Pass and seat reservation considerations

Reservations and supplements are compulsory on many Italian high-speed trains; private operator coverage varies.

Arriving by train and reaching the sights

Rome is a useful starting point, with key arrival stations including Roma Termini / Tiburtina (route-dependent). For Venice, consider Venezia Santa Lucia. Always confirm your station and the last-mile walk, bus or tram before paying for a hotel.

Budget for Venice arrival transfers and remember that some city stops have multiple major stations.

A practical rail itinerary idea

For a short introduction, begin in Rome and continue to Florence. If time permits, include Venice for a contrasting stop. This is a suggested sequence of places, not a claim of a daily direct service; check actual connections in the Rail Planner app and at the operator.

Practical tips for your Italy train trip

  • Check timetables for the exact day: frequency and border connections can change.
  • Confirm pass acceptance and book any compulsory seats before finalising accommodation.
  • Compare the total pass cost plus reservations against point-to-point tickets.
  • Reserve separate local transport or attraction tickets where required.
