Why visit Milan by train?
Milan is a distinctive addition to a rail itinerary through Italy. Visitors can combine Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and Brera district without automatically spending another whole day on trains. An Interrail Global Pass can be useful for the eligible rail journey into or out of the city, but entry tickets, local travel and non-participating services are separate costs.
Allow a realistic length of stay in Milan and confirm each onward rail connection for your travel date. Comparing a short local ticket with the cost of a pass day can help protect the value of a flexible pass.
Rail arrival: Milano Centrale / Porta Garibaldi
Check your ticket and Rail Planner for the exact station and operator; the city’s name alone does not identify the station, especially where multiple terminals or high-speed stops exist. The cathedral and Galleria sit around Piazza del Duomo, reachable by separately ticketed metro. Allow extra time with luggage, and do not assume local buses, trams or metro tickets are included in your rail pass.
Before travelling, confirm the departure platform, any engineering changes and station transfer time. The journey added to your mobile Interrail Global Rail Pass and any compulsory seat reservation must match the train you actually board.

Using the Interrail Global Pass here
Milan is a north-Italian rail crossroads: fast Trenitalia Frecciarossa trains often need paid pass reservations, while regional trains normally offer more flexibility. Reservations and supplements are compulsory on many Italian high-speed trains; private operator coverage varies. The Interrail Global Pass covers participating train services, not every operator or local transfer, and seat reservations or berth supplements may be mandatory. Always check the current train category and operator in the official planner.
Onward rail travel and more destinations
For onward travel consider Como, Turin, Verona and Bologna, checking which station your train uses. Suggested domestic additions include Rome, Florence, Venice. These are itinerary ideas rather than promises of a direct, daily or reservation-free train; check the actual connections before committing to hotels or admissions.
Read our Italy country rail guide and cross-border planning warnings to understand where extra ground transport may be needed.
Making the most of your visit
Consider staying two nights if you want an unhurried visit to the main sights. For an overnight railway stop, compare accommodation near Milano Centrale / Porta Garibaldi with the more atmospheric central districts. Evaluate walking distance, steps, luggage storage and early departure times rather than choosing by price alone.
Keep independent attraction tickets flexible until compulsory rail reservations are confirmed. A pass may reduce the need for separate point-to-point tickets on eligible routes, but it does not guarantee a seat on a reservations-only departure.
