How a flexible pass works
A flexible Interrail Global Rail Pass gives a fixed number of travel days within a broader one- or two-month validity period. Current options marketed by Rail Europe include 4, 5 or 7 travel days within one month, or 10 or 15 within two months. A day with only sightseeing need not use a flexi travel day; a day with eligible train boarding generally does. Plan the exact calendar pattern rather than simply counting nights abroad.
How a continuous pass works
A continuous Global Rail Pass offers eligible train travel throughout a consecutive validity window: currently 15 days, 22 days, one month, two months or three months. This can suit frequent local and intercity rail use, but additional reservations, supplements and uncovered services still cost extra. Travelling every day is not compulsory just because your pass is continuous.
Work from a sample itinerary
Imagine seven overnight stops: Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Lyon, Basel, Lucerne and Zurich. A flexible pass might require only the days you move between stops, but day trips and a train journey that crosses midnight can alter the count. A continuous pass may offer better value if you also take many regional journeys on sightseeing days. Compare your whole itinerary, not a headline price per day.
What counts as a travel day
A travel day is the selected calendar day used for pass travel, following issuer instructions and relevant time zone rules. Direct overnight trains departing on one day and continuing beyond midnight normally use the departure day only, provided you do not board a different train after midnight and pass validity covers the journey. More detail is in our night train guide.
How to compare the true cost
Get the live Rail Europe pass quote. Add compulsory seat reservations, sleeper accommodation, local metro tickets, extra buses or ferries, and any individual rail journeys on non-pass operators. Then compare with point-to-point tickets available for the same travellers and dates, including refund flexibility. Use the site calculator as a worksheet, not a live fare engine.
Check before buying
Eligibility is tied to the retailer’s current conditions and country of residence. Decide on class, adult/youth/senior category, available child arrangements and whether you need flexibility. The current Interrail Global Pass was formerly marketed as Eurail Global Pass; use the product now offered by Rail Europe.
