Why explore Turkey by rail?
Türkiye links the historic sites of Istanbul with Ankara and wider Anatolian landscapes. Its geography and train types require more planning than a short Western Europe city hop.
With a Global Pass you can combine Turkey with other participating countries without buying a new country-specific pass, where the trains are included. The challenge is designing a route around actual connections, required reservations and realistic sightseeing time.
Best destinations in Turkey for a rail holiday
Istanbul: Hagia Sophia
Begin with Hagia Sophia, then allow time for Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar. Check the rail station on the correct side of the Bosphorus and allow urban transfer time. See the full Istanbul rail guide.
Ankara: Anıtkabir
Begin with Anıtkabir, then allow time for Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and Ankara Citadel. Not all city transfers or metro journeys are included with a rail pass. See the full Ankara rail guide.
How to travel around Turkey with Interrail
TCDD operates eligible services; the Bosphorus separates major Istanbul stations, and long-distance trains can fill.
Choose a realistic number of nights in each destination. Before activating a travel day, confirm whether the specific service is run by a participating operator and whether it requires a supplement or reservation. A pass does not automatically include local buses, city metro, airport links, summit railways or ferries.
Pass and seat reservation considerations
High-speed, overnight and sleeper services may need reservations and supplements; confirm the chosen class and station.
Arriving by train and reaching the sights
Istanbul is a useful starting point, with key arrival stations including Istanbul Söğütlüçeşme / Halkalı (route-dependent). For Ankara, consider Ankara Gar / YHT Gar (service-dependent). Always confirm your station and the last-mile walk, bus or tram before paying for a hotel.
Not every popular destination or border crossing has a passenger rail service. Plan onward transport separately.
A practical rail itinerary idea
For a short introduction, begin in Istanbul and continue to Ankara . Allow an unhurried additional day to explore beyond the railway station. This is a suggested sequence of places, not a claim of a daily direct service; check actual connections in the Rail Planner app and at the operator.
Practical tips for your Turkey train trip
- Check timetables for the exact day: frequency and border connections can change.
- Confirm pass acceptance and book any compulsory seats before finalising accommodation.
- Compare the total pass cost plus reservations against point-to-point tickets.
- Reserve separate local transport or attraction tickets where required.
