Why choose Ankara for a European rail trip?
Ankara is one of the rewarding stops to consider in Turkey. Discover Anıtkabir, spend time around Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and include Ankara Citadel if your visit allows. The Interrail Global Pass can help link this stop with other participating rail destinations when the chosen train is eligible.
If you have a flexible pass, decide whether Ankara is a daytime sightseeing stop or a place to spend the night; using an extra travel day for a short transfer is not always the best value.
What to see and do in Ankara
- Anıtkabir
- Museum of Anatolian Civilizations
- Ankara Citadel
Choose the sights that suit your available time in Ankara. Check admission, opening days and local travel separately; attraction tickets are not included with the Interrail Global Rail Pass.
Arriving in Ankara by train
Main rail gateway: Ankara Gar / YHT Gar (service-dependent). The actual station for your journey depends on the train and route. Verify whether the pass covers your operator, and inspect the platform and service information shortly before departure.
From station to sightseeing
Not all city transfers or metro journeys are included with a rail pass. A pass does not generally include city metros, trams, sightseeing buses or attraction admissions unless a specific benefit says otherwise.
A practical one- or two-day sightseeing plan
After arriving in Ankara, allow time to reach your accommodation or arrange luggage storage. Choose one main sightseeing area rather than assuming every attraction is beside the station. For example, compare the locations of Anıtkabir and Museum of Anatolian Civilizations before fixing the order of your visit. For an overnight stop, keep some time free before your next departure and avoid tight connections with timed admission tickets.
Staying overnight can make sense if the city has several attractions or if your next connection leaves early. For a shorter stopover, verify luggage storage, opening hours and how far the sights are from the station.
Using the Interrail Global Pass for Ankara
TCDD operates eligible services; the Bosphorus separates major Istanbul stations, and long-distance trains can fill.
High-speed, overnight and sleeper services may need reservations and supplements; confirm the chosen class and station. Add each required journey to the mobile pass in accordance with the current instructions and keep seat reservation documents separately available when necessary. Pass validity is not a guarantee of a seat.
