Why explore Montenegro by rail?

Montenegro’s rail journey towards the Adriatic crosses striking mountain terrain. Podgorica and Bar provide two contrasting stops.

With a Global Pass you can combine Montenegro with other participating countries without buying a new country-specific pass, where the trains are included. The challenge is designing a route around actual connections, required reservations and realistic sightseeing time.

Best destinations in Montenegro for a rail holiday

Podgorica: Millennium Bridge

Begin with Millennium Bridge, then allow time for Ribnica confluence and Old Turkish Town. Use this as a base to check limited rail schedules rather than assuming dense connections. See the full Podgorica rail guide.

Bar: Stari Bar ruins

Begin with Stari Bar ruins, then allow time for Bar waterfront and King Nikola's Palace. Old Bar is several kilometres from the rail station and requires transport. See the full Bar rail guide.

How to travel around Montenegro with Interrail

The Belgrade–Bar corridor is the best-known international railway route; check current operation, border formalities and service frequency.

Choose a realistic number of nights in each destination. Before activating a travel day, confirm whether the specific service is run by a participating operator and whether it requires a supplement or reservation. A pass does not automatically include local buses, city metro, airport links, summit railways or ferries.

Pass and seat reservation considerations

Reservations and sleeper booking may apply; interruptions and service changes are possible.

Arriving by train and reaching the sights

Podgorica is a useful starting point, with key arrival stations including Podgorica railway station. For Bar, consider Bar railway station. Always confirm your station and the last-mile walk, bus or tram before paying for a hotel.

Do not assume Kotor or Budva can be reached by train; budget a separate road transfer.

A practical rail itinerary idea

For a short introduction, begin in Podgorica and continue to Bar . Allow an unhurried additional day to explore beyond the railway station. This is a suggested sequence of places, not a claim of a daily direct service; check actual connections in the Rail Planner app and at the operator.

Practical tips for your Montenegro train trip

  • Check timetables for the exact day: frequency and border connections can change.
  • Confirm pass acceptance and book any compulsory seats before finalising accommodation.
  • Compare the total pass cost plus reservations against point-to-point tickets.
  • Reserve separate local transport or attraction tickets where required.
