Bernina and Albula lines, Switzerland
The Rhaetian Railway offers spectacular views through Graubünden and over the Bernina Pass. Ordinary participating trains can be an alternative to branded panoramic services; premium Bernina Express coaches generally involve a separate compulsory reservation. Verify both options directly with RhB and current pass benefits.
Norwegian mountains and fjords
The Bergen Line between Oslo and Bergen crosses mountain landscapes and is one of Norway’s signature railway experiences. Fjord cruises and the separate Flåm Railway have their own validity and ticket rules; the Interrail Global Rail Pass should not be assumed to pay the full cost.
Rhine Valley, Germany
Conventional trains along the Rhine between major German hubs pass vineyards, castles and river towns. They may take longer than fast inland services, which is part of the attraction. Choose the actual riverside routing rather than assuming every train from Cologne to Frankfurt follows it.
Austria’s Alpine rail routes
Routes around Innsbruck, Salzburg and southern Austria are useful for combining mountain landscapes with city stops. Rail corridors and scenic branch lines vary in pass eligibility. Private mountain lifts and tourist-only services usually charge separately.
Scottish Highlands
Scotland’s West Highland routes and other regional lines provide mountain and loch scenery. The route to Fort William is much more practical as part of a UK-focused rail plan than an intercontinental dash. Book overnight sleeper berths if using the Caledonian Sleeper.
Coastlines and historic regions
Regional trains along parts of the French Mediterranean, Italian Riviera and Portugal’s valleys can be rewarding. Local trains are often slower but less reservation-heavy than fast intercity services. Protect time for station changes and check service frequency before taking detours.
